Will Nokia Announce a Windows Phone 7 Partnership Tomorrow?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 07:50 PM

"Microsoft and Nokia are close to cementing a partnership to produce mobile phones together, according to multiple reports. It's like that celebrity couple you never expected to hook up, but who somehow did. Even a former Nokia employee was betting against the prospect of the phone maker working with Microsoft, which would involve shipping Nokia hardware with Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system."

Will Nokia drop a bomb on the mobile world tomorrow and announce that they'll be partnering with Microsoft on a Windows Phone 7 device? My Magic 8 Ball says "It's looking good." Nokia is in a tough spot, having made little to no ground with home-grown MeeGo, and in a year lost over 10% world-wide market share. Nokia makes excellent hardware, but I've personally found their software to be utterly lacking, and their attempts at building an ecosystem have been mixed at best.

I could see Nokia pulling a Palm - build a Windows Phone 7 line for a generation or two, then when their own software is ready, they ditch Microsoft. Of course, we saw how that worked out for Palm...yet Nokia is bigger and has a lot more money. We'll see what happens tomorrow - but I for one would welcome the excellent hardware designs of Nokia into the Windows Phone family.

Smartphones – Is It The Total Experience That Makes The Difference?

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Articles & Resources" @ 08:00 AM

I regularly get asked by friends and colleagues for technology advice, and smartphones are a frequent topic. A recent conversation with a colleague got me thinking about how the smartphone marketplace was evolving, and how people might be making purchasing decisions over the next year or so. Purchasing behaviour is of course a complex topic, one that requires unique analysis expertise within the personnel of any product vendor. I'm not a marketing guru by any stretch, but, like you, I do have some opinions on the factors that influence people one way or another in the smartphone world. Read more...

The Smartphone Industry is About to Get a Whole Lot More Interesting

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 07:00 AM

What an interesting year in the smartphone industry we are embarking on now. In the very near future we'll see Windows Phone 7 hardware in the hands of developers and, undoubtedly, many analysts and industry watchers. We'll start to get impressions on just how innovative this platform will be, its usability, and whether or not it will win over the plaudits of smartphone enthusiasts. We'll also see new hardware and software releases of the Palm WebOS platform once HP officially gets closes its acquisition and makes its first mark. We'll see whether RIM can modernize its smartphone OS and finally deliver a workable browser. We'll also see if these rumours of a BlackBerry tablet have any substance, and if so, whether anyone really wants a BlackBerry companion. We'll watch the steady progression of Android devices as they try to take on the iPhone and gain market share. Will there be unexpected surprises? You bet. What will happen with MeeGo? Can Nokia produce a platform that will appeal to North American businesses and consumers?

Of course, watching and seeing how Microsoft's mobile strategy plays out will be a critical endeavour. Is Microsoft driving the smartphone industry? Not at present, but you can be sure Apple, RIM, Google and other platform providers are paying attention. This is one industry segment where Microsoft is not an island against which getting a beachhead is near impossible. However, if Microsoft can make good on the seemingly tangible opportunity to connect and combine its treasure trove of services and enabling platforms, then we could see a formidable new platform emerge. Having an outright success with wave one - Windows Phone 7 for the consumer - will be essential. Is the pressure on Microsoft? No question about it.
