Get Ready to Skype From Your Windows Phone This Year

Posted by Nelson Ocampo in "Windows Phone Software" @ 11:00 PM

"You heard right -- Skype just went from 'nowhere near' Windows Phone 7, to 'on the roadmap,' to 'definitely coming this fall.'"

Microsoft's Joe Belifore confirmed at the Mix11 conference that Skype is coming to Windows Phone 7 in a few months. It wasn't too long ago that Skype seemed disinterested in developing an app for Windows Phone. But I guess a lot could change in a few months. Especially knowing that Microsoft is opening up key access to ports that Skype would likely be using.

Belifore mentioned that Microsoft has been working closely with Skype, and had a lot of praise to give them. That gives an indication that there is likely more involved than Skype simply deciding to create an app on their own.

It's clear that people at Microsoft do see what customers are asking for, and that they are actively pursuing ways to turn those wants into reality.

VOIP Capabilities Coming to Windows Phone?

Posted by Danny Simmons in "Windows Phone Developer" @ 11:00 AM

"Socket-layers are critically needed for such services as VOIP aka Skype, Viber, etc. We now know that multitasking is coming to Windows Phone 7 with 'Mango' but now we have a very strong hint that socket-support, in some way, may be coming as well."

Services such as Skype have long lamented the limitations in their ability to develop their applications for Windows Phone 7. Apparently Microsoft has heard their cries and are considering adding this functionality in an upcoming update. It's one of their "top 2 or 3 requests from developers". Official announcements have not been made, but Brandon Watson definitely hints here at a possible official announcement at MIX11. In any case, we can look forward to more exciting announcements at MIX11.

Skype for Windows Phone 7 Isn't Coming

Posted by Darius Wey in "Windows Phone Software" @ 03:15 AM

"Speaking an event in Sydney Dan Neary Asia Pacific Vice President for Skype was hesitant to explain why no development was taking place for the new Windows Mobile offering, however he did say that the VOIP communication Company was developing new offerings for the iPhone, iPad and Android based phones."

Back in March, we reported that Skype had killed the availability of Skype for Windows Mobile as a result of what the company perceived to be fragmentation across the Windows Mobile platform. Considering Microsoft is focused on reducing fragmentation in Windows Phone 7, we were hopeful that Skype would consider bringing its popular VoIP product back to the platform, but that idea now appears dead in the water. What's interesting is that the company is now reluctant to provide a reason. In the meantime, it's planning to roll out new versions of Skype for iPhone, iPad, and Android, and as you know, these are all platforms that consumers are currently going gaga for. With that in mind, we're guessing the real reason why Skype has abandoned Windows Phone 7 development is that it simply doesn't see much potential in it. And only time will tell whether it's spot on about that.
