Palm: The Rise and Fall of a Legend

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Articles & Resources" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.maximumtech.com/palm-ris...legend?page=0,0

"I was there, when the Pilot landed. It was the summer of 1996, and the US Robotics Pilot 5000 had just arrived in the bootLab (‘boot Magazine' was the then-newly-launched precursor to Maximum PC). With unprecedented ferocity, we editors were fighting gladiator style for dibs on reviewing this tiny bit of pocket-sized plastic with its dingy monochrome screen. Not even the latest uber-PC or 3D graphics card generated such editorial lust."

Although it feels like ancient history now, it was only a few years ago that neither the iPhone, nor Android, existed and the smartphone wars were fought between the likes of Palm, Microsoft, and RIM. It's amazing how fast things change. This article, written by Chris Dunphy - a fellow I had a good natured rivalry with back in 2001 - covers the inception of Palm, the effective dissolution of Palm (some might say multiple times), and everything in between. It's an excellent read and gives some insight into what Palm did, and didn't do, right.

Palm Focuses On WebOS - Drops Windows Mobile

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC Competition" @ 06:30 AM

"Due to importance of webOS to our overall strategy, we've made the decision to dedicate all future development resources to the evolution of webOS. Which means that going forward, our roadmap will include only Palm webOS-based devices."

And with that statement at the recent Palm earnings announcement, Palm Chairman Jon Rubinstein killed off any PalmOS and Windows Mobile devices for the future. This is not unexpected. PalmOS was at the end of its life about four years ago. That is why they started using Windows Mobile in the first place. The enterprise customer needed something more robust. Now that WebOS has launched, Palm thinks it has the answer and will focus solely on that platform.

What do you think? Will the loss of Palm from Microsoft Windows Mobile licensees hurt MS in any way or will Palm vanish virtually unnoticed?

Phone Arena Reviews the Palm Treo Pro (CDMA)

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 08:55 PM

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Pal...iew-r_2111.html

"We still like what we get in the Treo Pro, but at the same time can't help but look forward to the Pre. We're not quite sure where it fits in Sprint's lineup, given that HTC offers two devices that not only offer more features, but are better designed. Still, the Pro has a good design and will probably find its way into more than a few business suits."

Phone Arena has published a review of Sprint's Palm Treo Pro, which swaps GSM for CDMA. A few niggles aside, impressions are positive; however, with so many new, exciting, and more powerful devices on the horizon, this may be one device to avoid.

Palm Treo Pro Reviewed at Pocket PC Dubai

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 08:30 AM

http://pocketpcdubai.com/index.php?...ware&Itemid=197

"The Palm Treo Pro has been one of the most anticipated devices of 2008 thanks to its radical design change (from its predecessors) and current (almost) industry standard hardware specifications. It is one the first devices from Palm that is actually moving along with the times as opposed to it's previous iterations such as the Treo 750 and the likes. The Treo 750 was by far one of the best devices that I had ever used; however it's biggest drawback (for me) was the lack of WiFi and GPS."

Palm finally got the memo from 2003 and put WiFi and even GPS into their latest offering. Nice looks in a fairly compact form - anyone out there looking to grab a Treo Pro? Check out Pocket PC Dubai's review for more great info.

Palm Pulling Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade for AT&T Treo 750 on October 31, 2008

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Software" @ 03:10 AM

http://www.palm.com/us/support/down...update/att.html

"The availability of updates that include Windows Mobile 6 for Treo 750 smartphones will expire as of 10/31/2008. Users of these devices who want this update must download it before the expiration date."

HTC isn't the only one pulling upgrades. If you have an AT&T-branded Treo 750 and want to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6, you have a little over a week to do so.

Palm Treo Pro Reviewed

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 11:50 PM

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/Pal...iew-r_2044.html

"For the most part we like what we see in the Treo Pro. Palm has always been good at making functional business devices, but they’ve lacked in the innovation department for a long time now. The Pro brings a complete makeover to the Treo line that is years overdue, but great nonetheless. Functionality remains par for the course, though we would have liked to see a prettier interface. HTC and SE have set a new bar for redesigning Windows Mobile, and while Palm has caught up in the hardware department they risk being left behind if their software efforts can’t keep up. They’ve made such strides, we’d hate to see them fall by the wayside once and for all. The Pro really is a good looking device, and hopefully marks an important step on Palm’s return to relevance."

It may not have the bells and whistles of HTC's Touch series, but it seems the Treo Pro still has the looks and functionality to win consumers over. If you've been eyeballing this one for a while and want another opinion before laying down the cash, take a look at Phone Arena's seven-page review, complete with high-res eye-candy.

Windows Mobile 6 Available for Palm/Verizon Treo 700wx

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Software" @ 09:25 AM

http://www.palm.com/us/support/down...e6/verizon.html

Updater v1.24 is now available for the Palm/Verizon Treo 700wx. Wait, we know what you're thinking. Just an insignificant dot upgrade, right? Nope, not this time. v1.24 packs Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Yes, Windows Mobile 6 Professional for your two-year old device. Our hats off to Palm and Verizon for making this happen. And to all the other manufacturers and carriers reading this, take note. Users love OS upgrades, no matter how old the device. Seriously.

Palm Treo 800w Reviewed

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 03:05 AM

http://mobilitysite.com/2008/09/pal...-800w-review-2/

If you're interested in the Treo 800w, take a look at Bryan's review over at Mobility Site, as he takes you through both the software and the hardware - in particular, the 320 x 320 screen, which is still somewhat of a rarity among current Windows Mobile devices.

Palm Treo Pro Is Official

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 09:38 AM

http://www.palm.com/us/products/sma...phones/treopro/

iPAQ 910, look out! Palm's worst kept secret has finally arrived. You'd be hard pressed talking the Treo Pro down. It looks good (well, we think so, anyway), and has a great set of specs: Qualcomm MSM7201 400MHz processor, 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, quad-band GSM/EDGE, tri-band (850/1900/2100MHz) UMTS/HSDPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, a 320 x 320 touch screen, a 2.0-megapixel camera, and a microSDHC slot supporting up to 32GB. There's also a 3.5mm headphone jack built just for your favourite cans. The Treo Pro runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, comes in black (Palm prefers to call it 'obsidian'), and will be available unlocked for $549 as early as September. If you prefer the carrier route, Telstra (Australia), Vodafone (Europe), and O2 (Europe) will be selling it for the low, low price of 'free'.

Press release and images after the break. Now, who wants one?

Palm Treo 850 Leaked, Renamed Treo Pro

Posted by Darius Wey in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 03:25 AM

http://discussion.wmexperts.com/sho...ad.php?t=169693

Oops, Palm let one slip. What you see above and after the break are snaps of a Treo Pro (aka Treo 850) Flash demo that was hosted on Palm's very own website. Like the 500 and Centro, the Pro opts for a sleeker look, which we think is a step in the right direction. It includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, IR, HSDPA, a camera, an expansion slot, and a Micro-USB connector, which we'd normally disapprove of if it was anything like HTC's ExtUSB; but Palm isn't HTC. They've done a good deed by including a 3.5mm headphone jack for all your audio needs.

Unfortunately, no word on a price or release date, but the moment we know, we'll let you know.

Treo 800w Early Review Roundup

Posted by Janak Parekh in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 07:00 AM

Along with that "other phone", Palm (relatively quietly) launched their 800w, and the early reviews have been pouring in. For those of you considering the 800w, here's a collection of unboxings and reviews you may find helpful.

[ The Gadgeteer | Brighthand | CNET | Engadget Mobile | Mobility Site (photos, video) ]

In general, most reviewers seem to think it's a worthwhile improvement over the earlier Treos, with the biggest criticisms being the thickness, the battery life, and the connector switch to microUSB. Have any of you picked up the 800w? If so, contribute your thoughts in the thread. We'll be sure to update you with more reviews as they come in.

Update 7/24 2:15pm: Changed Engadget Mobile's link to reflect their full review posted this afternoon.

Boy Genius Report Shows Off Pics of Treo 850?

Posted by Janak Parekh in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2008...-palm-treo-850/

"How about we start out with an exclusive dose of some live shots of the Palm Treo 850! Truth be told, this puppy is pretty smooth looking! Details are still coming in but we can tell you it’s sporting a 400 MHz processor and 100 MB of RAM."

It's not bad-looking, and certainly a lot less dated than the existing Treo look. I presume this device has a 320x320 screen, which would give it a halfway decent DPI. We don't have any details or confirmations yet, but we'll make sure to update you guys when we do.

Palm Treo 800w Available From Sprint In July?

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 05:00 AM

http://www.brighthand.com/default.asp?newsID=13913

"According to a leaked product roadmap, Palm's next high-end Windows Mobile smartphone will be introduced by Sprint in July. This report in in-line with comments from Palm executives, who said recently that their company will refresh its line of business-oriented smartphones this summer."

This is being touted as a replacement for the 700w, so it would seem to be a WM Professional (Pocket PC) device, not a WM Standard (Smartphone) as has been suggested by some rumors. It also shows WM 6.0 instead of 6.1, but this is an early list and it is still possible 6.1 will get loaded before it ships. They are providing a camera and cameraless version which will be good for those in jobs where camera phones are forbidden. I also believe this is the first Treo from Palm with built in WiFi. It is unconfirmed yet as to whether or not this device will have a 320x320 screen.
