Hands on at CTIA with the TerreStar Genus Windows Mobile 6.5.3 Satellite Phone

"Once a year or so we get another look at a Windows Mobile satellite phone, and such is the case with the TerreStar Genus, billed as the world's first smartphone with 3G and satellite capability. Unfortunately there's no hand-off directly from 3G to satellite, so you effectively have to throw a switch from one to the other. But is that really something we worry about? Heck, no! It's a feakin' Windows Mobile 6.5.3 satellite phone!"

Obviously this isn't for everyone but it is cool. Now when you're out there - and I mean way out there - you can have a cool phone with decent features that works. So if you're an AT&T customer and need a device with satellite features you now have an option. Hit the link to head over to WMExperts site for more info, pics, and a video.

WM6.1 Satellite Phone Reference Design Unveiled

"The dreamers, they have their dreams. One of the big dreams for 2009-10, it seems, is new, hybrid satellite/cellular phones that work everywhere, but don't look like Cro-Magnon rock-hewing tools. MSV's Lost-style handset is supposedly coming in 2010, but it may be beaten to market by Elektrobit's sleek Windows Mobile satellite phone, which is supposedly arriving in 2009 and looks like a Motorola Q. The most striking feature of the Elektrobit device is its antenna: it doesn't seem to have one. This is a slim, light (4.7 x 2.5 x .8" HWD) phone...Or that's the plan, at least: this is a reference design, and the satellites aren't up in the air yet."

Well, color me impressed. This is the first satellite phone I've seen that's not ugly. It's about time that satphones catch up to the miniaturization of the rest of the industry. Well, in theory at least -- until this network is launched. I would assume that battery life would suffer in satellite mode, but it's a start.
