Adobe To Refocus On HTML5

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 03:00 AM

"Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates."

As was reported by ZDNet last week, what seemed unthinkable not that long ago has happened: Adobe is embracing HTML5 on mobile platforms. The word is that Adobe is stopping development of the venerable Flash player for browsers on mobile. At the same time, they will be increasing their efforts on HTML5 innovations. On an official Adobe blog, the following detail was published:

"However, HTML5 is now universally supported on major mobile devices, in some cases exclusively. This makes HTML5 the best solution for creating and deploying content in the browser across mobile platforms. We are excited about this, and will continue our work with key players in the HTML community, including Google, Apple, Microsoft and RIM, to drive HTML5 innovation they can use to advance their mobile browsers."

One of the more interesting aspects of this situation is that Apple seems to have been quite prophetic in seeing this development play out. Their iOS mobile platform has not supported Flash since its inception, and they have been quite emphatic that they were not going to support it. Without question HTML5 is gaining momentum, and with Adobe's backing we'll see even more acceleration in the months ahead.

WP7 Impresses With HTML5 Performance On IE9

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 06:30 PM

"When it comes to running HTML5 content on a mobile browser, it looks as though Microsoft is setting the pace with its Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Phone 7 combination. The key factor? Hardware acceleration in the browser. A demonstration given during MIX11 in Las Vegas today pitted an iPhone 4 and Nexus S against a HTC Windows Phone 7 device. iOS vs. Android vs. Windows. The test was called HTML5 Speed Reading and performed a render test. The clear winner was the Windows Phone running IE9 due to the fact it takes advantage of hardware acceleration."

The test was run during Microsoft's recent MIX11 event in Las Vegas. While these sorts of tests are always open to criticism by one camp or another, we can safely conclude that hardware acceleration will be prevalent in the year's ahead. It does seem to have a very positive impact on render speed. It will be interesting to see how all the platforms increase performance using this technique and other approaches in the next year or two.

Windows Phone 7 Multitasking, IE9 and Skydrive Future Features Shown

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 03:30 PM

"Giving a closer look at some of the new Windows Phone 7 features that are coming this spring, VP for Windows Phone Program Management Joe Belfiore demonstrated the operating system's upcoming ability to multitask, integrate with SkyDrive, and display web pages using IE 9. Though full details were scarce, we got a good taste of what we can expect when Microsoft rolls out its update in the March or April time frame."

These videos are all unfortunately pretty bad in terms of quality, but these videos are showing three of the key features that will be coming to Windows Phone 7 later in 2011: multitasking (though in reality it's not "true" multitasking), IE9, and Skydrive support for the Office hub.
