Use Hotmail Interface For Favorite Email Accounts

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Windows Phone News" @ 01:30 PM

"Microsoft has been cramming tons of useful new features into Hotmail this year, and the venerable webmail app is looking better than ever. Today, Microsoft has announced the arrival of another new feature -- one that is squarely aimed at encouraging new users to give Hotmail a try."

As the article points out though, people are reluctant to switch because they like their existing email address. Now, if you like the Hotmail user interface and features, you can use your existing email address with it as long as your current email can be accessed via POP3. Hotmail will just pull those messages into your account and you can "send as" so the recipient sees only your preferred email address.

I've been doing this for a few years, but with the GMail interface. The problem with this (at least with GMail) is that you cannot see on your mobile device which emails are native and which are being pulled in from outside accounts, and all replies go out as if they were from your GMail account. I am not sure if Hotmail has addressed this or not, but I'd actually be surprised if they have. Anyone here tried this yet with Hotmail?

Hotmail Gets Exchange ActiveSync Support

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Windows Phone News" @ 02:00 PM

If you use Hotmail and do not already have an Exchange account set up on your WinMo device, you might want to give this a try. It isn't official so it could break or stop working altogether until an official announcement is made. If you use the server m.hotmail.com in your Exchange ActiveSync setup on your device and then use your Hotmail ID and password, you might get it to sync.

Currently email, contacts and appointments are supported. For tasks, you'll still have to rely on your desktop software to sync with. Poor tasks, always seems to get left out. In fairness though, is there even a place at Hotmail to store tasks?

Windows Live Hotmail to Provide SSL and ActiveSync Support

Posted by Eriq Cook in "Windows Phone News" @ 10:12 PM

"More information is being revealed about the next iteration of Microsoft's Live-branded products. We know when the new programs are going to start rolling out, we know that Windows XP won't be supported, and we know a lot about the features of the next Windows Live Messenger...Now Windows Live Hotmail is in the spotlight. The web front-end gets a load of new bells and whistles, but two new features stand out in particular.

Windows Live Hotmail is undergoing some major upgrades with two notable features including full SLL support and ActiveSync. What does this mean? As for SSL, email sessions will now be fully secure through the entire session (not only for login but for sending/receiving) and enabled by default.

ActiveSync support will give users a full sync experience by providing push support and syncing of mail, calendar and contact folders with smartphones. This goes beyond IMAP's limited support for only mail sync support.

The new updates are scheduled for rollout in June, along with a host of other Live product updates. This is great news for Hotmail users and a little overdue in my opinion. Do you currently use Hotmail and looking forward to the updates? Let us know your thoughts.

Put Windows Live on Your Windows Mobile Phone

Posted by Rocco Augusto in "Smartphone News" @ 11:08 PM

http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/w...bile-phone.aspx

"Windows Live for Windows Mobile is now available to download for your Windows Mobile phone. Windows Live for Windows Mobile lets Windows Mobile users sync their email from Windows Live Hotmail as well as their Windows Live Contacts. Just download the .cab file for the version of Windows Mobile you are running (Standard or Professional). Windows Live for Windows Mobile works on phones running both Windows Mobile and Windows Mobile 6 (and 6.1)."

It seems like just yesterday we were reporting on the Beta version being available for download, huh? Well Windows Live is now available and ready for download in final version form. While Windows Live isn't exactly on my must have software list - mostly due to the incredibly annoying integration of my Exchange contacts with my Windows Live contacts - the program did serve to be pretty handy the few times that I did use it. According to Neowin and Windows Live Messenger has been removed as to not interfere with revenue that the carrier would normally make off SMS... which I find utterly ridiculous because the same argument could be made for email and Microsoft chose to leave Hotmail integration in with this software package. Oh well. You can download the latest version of Windows Live for Windows Mobile Smartphones and Pocket PCs here.
