C-motech Mangrove Tablet At CTIA

We last saw the Mangrove in November and there hasn't been much news about this 7" Snapdragon-driven WM6.5 tablet since. WMExperts however has managed to get their hands on it at the recently concluded CTIA convention in Las Vegas, and shot the video above. C-motech, the Korean company behind the Mangrove, doesn't seem to have done any customisation over the WM6.5 UI and the RAM/ROM available is a little underwhelming at 256MB/512MB, especially considering the size of the beastie. I'm sure all the excitement over the iPad has companies looking at how they can get on the bandwagon, but if the Mangrove is going to be a contender, C-motech needs to put in a bit (ok, a lot) more work into it.

Care For A REALLY Big Phone?

No, I'm not talking about the Touch HD2. C-motech, a Korean company, showed off a prototype of a 7" tablet running WM6.5 on the same Snapdragon platform. Details are sparse, but it supposedly has every wireless option known to man (bar CDMA), 2 USB slots, and a WVGA resistive touch screen. I'd expect pretty long battery life even driving that big screen, but try fitting this baby into your pocket! Manbag, anyone? Admittedly, this is more a candidate for the netbook/UMPC space, which makes the inclusion of cellular capability a plus point, but I think there are better alternative device strategies for the kind of usage scenarios this is meant to fill - especially if you're replacing your phone in the bargain. It is possible to take convergence a little too far.

WM-Powered Tablet With Snapdragon

There have been attempts over the years for devices with larger screens running energy-sipping processors and OSs, with varying degrees of (non)success, like the hybrid HTC Shift. One of the biggest problems was that for many years the ARM architecture just couldn't provide the necessary power to run applications at a level people expect, to compete with their desktop experience. Now with the advances in both power and graphics, and support for Web2.0 enablers like Adobe's Flash, there's a better argument in favour of putting Win CE/Win Mobile on bigger devices, like the one featured here, which has a 1HGz Snapdragon processor and every radio bar the phone (and we can hope on that score). Would I get one? If the price was competitive enough, I'd certainly consider it.
