Verizon to Offer 700wx WM6 Update?

Posted by Janak Parekh in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 08:00 AM

"...we've become aware of some upcoming updates for the Treo 700wx... Some internal training slides have been leaked onto the internet that detail the updates. The updates will be released sometime this "Spring and Summer," according to the slides. Update 1.24 for the Verizon Treo 700wx will update the OS to Windows Mobile 6 Professional! WooHoo! That's great! However, it's too bad that Sprint isn't getting the update. Also, Palm is going to put Windows Mobile 6 on the device even though Windows Mobile 6.1 is already out."

I missed posting on this last week; too bad it's not 6.1, but given the testing time for any new OS, I'm not surprised. In any case, Verizon 700wx owners, you may have something to look forward to in the new future. (I'd be much happier if WM OS updates were offered across many devices, but it looks like that's not happening any time soon.)

HKC Offers Dual-SIM Windows Mobile 6 Series: W1000 and G1000

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.greenbulb.com/The HKC Dual SIM Windows Mobile Series press release.pdf

"HKC, HKC Communication (Hong Kong) Limited., is proud to announce the launched of two pioneering models of dual SIM Card Windows Mobile Professional™ PDA phones with dual network (GSM + CDMA) or Dual Standby (GSM +GSM) capabilities. The two members of the 1000 series, W1000 and G1000, both designed with a slim and stylist body are equipped with different double network capabilities. The W1000 is equipped with one GSM and one CDMA SIM slot, making phone calls and data communication on different networks using one phone a possibility. The G1000 on the other hand has two built-in GSM SIM slots, which allows voice and data communications between two different GSM networks concurrently. Both models run on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0 Professional [and] the Bluetooth™ feature is enabled, perfect for consumers on the move. To top off these qualities, its large 2.8” inch screen gives off crystal clear images making viewing multimedia on the go an enjoyable experience."

If you need a phone capable of dual networks, HKC is offering some cool solutions. The W1000 offers one GSM and one CDMA slot and uses a 200 MHz TI OMAP850 Qualcomm 6025 CPU while the G1000 offers 2 GSM slots and a 200 MHz TI OMAP850 Dragonfly CPU. Both will feature 256 MB ROM and 64 MB RAM, a 2 MP macro-enabled camera, a micro SD memory card slot for adding up to 4GB storage space and WorldCard Mobile software for managing business cards. These are described as the first two in the HKC 1000 series, so there may be more to come. It will be interesting to see how much this costs when it hits the market through resellers or carriers.

Engadget Mobile Gets Facetime With the LG KS20

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 10:00 PM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...th-the-lg-ks20/

"Putting Windows Mobile 6's user interface at ease with fat fingers is a monumental challenge -- but it's not a challenge manufacturers are shying away from. Perhaps they see devices like the iPhone as a threat they can't ignore any longer, or perhaps they're simply tired of waiting for Microsoft to roll something truly revolutionary, but at any rate, companies like HTC with its TouchFLO interface are doing pretty much everything they can to keep the stylus firmly locked away. That's where the LG KS20 comes into play, which steals as much of the Viewty's identity as it can while still keeping Windows Mobile 6 under the hood."

Engadget Mobile has put together a little bit of commentary with a lot of pictures on the LG KS20. Mostly it seems to be a nice looking phone with fair capabilities, but don't expect to be wow'd by this WM 6 contender, especially with the lack of widespread North American HSDPA. From the pictures, it looks like it would be a real fingerprint and scratch magnet! Anyone played with the KS20 and if so, was it a keeper?
