HTC Opal/Viva: New Windows Mobile Smartphone on the Horizon?

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.theunwired.net/?item=unv...rtphone-sighted

"According to smartmobilegadgets blog, HTC is working on a new Windows Mobile Professional smartphone which is expected to be released soon. The HTC Opal, which is most likely a codename only, seems to be HTC's planned low-entry follower of the HTC Touch and like the HTC Touch, also the HTC Opal is a 2.5G Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone supporting quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE only. UMTS and HSDPA are left, most likely in favor of the price. Nevertheless. WiFi b/g as well as Bluetooth 2.0 are also part of the HTC Opal. Also the HTC Opal is expected to be powered by a TI OMAP 850 CPU at 200 MHz only."

Following the release of HTC flagship Windows Mobile phones in the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, it looks like a low-end Touch phone is in the works. In this case, low-end still means quadband GSM/GPRS/EDGE, Bluetooth and WiFi b/g, along with a MicroSD expansion slot. Smartmobilegadgets blog has a PDF showing it's planned features. HTC Source is reporting the phone will be released as the HTC Viva and credits Windows Mobile Italy (whom first broke the news about this product) in saying the Viva will first be marketed in Asia under the Dopod brand name beginning on September 15th.

Photos of Sprint's HTC Touch Diamond and Touch Pro Now at Engadget

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 05:00 PM

"You know you love it, new Windows Mobile -- even new carrier is good enough for us -- hardware always gets us all thrilled and chirpy. Sprint's really blown it open today with the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro announcements, so to honor them we got our hands on the Touch diamond. We like this set, Sprint's version in red -- a well chosen, soft and kind red -- is no exception and while a bit husky, we expect it's going to be well accepted and will be finding its way into many pockets come September 14th. Sadly, the Touch Pro was absent at CTIA, but we'll do our best to dig it up before the show closes out. Enjoy the pics."

Yesterday, Sprint made the announcement about the coming HTC Touch Diamond and the HTC Touch Pro phones. Today, Engadget Mobile has lots of shots of both devices so you can get a closer look. One interesting observation Sean Cooper makes in the writeup about the Touch Pro: "The Diamond murders the Pro for total pocketability, sex appeal, and feel in the hand -- so you've really got to ask yourself just how badly you need that keyboard before you pull the trigger one way or another." Interesting question. I think my first reaction would be to go for the keyboard, but the included 4gb memory and smaller size make the Diamond an interesting consideration. Check out the pictures for the Touch Diamond here. If you had to choose between the two, which one would you lean toward?

Is HTC's NEON400 a CDMA Touch Dual?

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 09:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/04/...dma-touch-dual/

"In HTC parlance, the "Neon" codename denotes a device of the Touch Dual form factor -- original Touch styling plus a slider keypad, a drill we all know by now. This particular form factor seems to be a pretty popular one, too, considering the sheer number of variants HTC's turned out; at this point, we have one for Europe, one for North America, and one for Japan, and a new FCC filing suggests that there's still at least one more trick in that pony. The so-called NEON400 doesn't give much away from the ID label document that we see here, but test reports indicate that it's sporting CDMA 850 / 1900 -- just right for launching on Sprint, Verizon, Alltel -- you get the idea -- and obviously, we'll see EV-DO in there as well. Against the Touch Diamond, the Dual is starting to look just a little dated, but it gets that all-important keypad that the Diamond lacks -- so even networks that end up launching the Diamond can realistically make room for this one in the lineup when it's announced. By someone other than the FCC, that is."

HTC NEON 400 FCC Picture

While not quite Glamour Shots, the FCC does give us a nice informational look at the label for HTC's new NEON 400. The North American market already has a GSM/GPRS/EDGE version of the Touch Dual, but not for the CDMA carriers. Browse the FCC Office of Engineering and Technology Exhibit documents and pictures here. You can look, just don't Touch.

Engadget Mobile Offers Eyecandy of the Verizon XV6900

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 11:00 PM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...v6900-hands-on/

"Anyone remotely familiar with the HTC or Sprint Touch will feel right at home with Verizon's version, the XV6900. The XV6900 isn't content to just fall in line and play "me too," though -- Big Red decided to go with a blindingly glossy white finish, bucking the soft-touch black used as a staple of the Touch line, and that could be a boon or a bust depending on who you are and how you intend to use the device."

If you've been eyeing the GSM version of the HTC Touch, but are a Verizon customer, take a look at the photo gallery of the XV6900 that Engadget Mobile as put together. Personally, I think I prefer the dark gray of the other Touch versions, but a sharper screen is nice to hear about, plus the addition of 3G. What do you think of Touch, The White Album? Any Verizon customers making the switch or already done so?

Alltel Touch Receives Firmware Update, Includes EV-DO Rev. A

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 07:00 AM

http://www.phonearena.com/htmls/All...cle-a_2703.html

"Alltel today became the first carrier to bring EVDO Rev. A to the Touch. This new ROM includes a new bootloader and radio, and is specific to the Alltel Touch. In addition to Rev. A this new ROM "improves Bluetooth performance, fixing connectivity issues with some headsets and other devices" and gives Alltel customers the ability to receive video messages. Interestingly, there is no mention of GPS and it is confirmed that this is still not working. We've been hearing rumors of a Sprint upgrade since January, and Verizon initially said their variant would launch with Rev. A and GPS, so we'd expect both carriers to have new ROMs out sooner rather than later."

Alltel Touch users can find their firmware update here to ROM version 3.04.671.2. It includes a speed bump with EV-DO Rev. A, Bluetooth performance improvements, and the ability to receive video messages. Sprint and Verizon users are cautioned they could brick their devices if they try this update, so wait!

New smartphone from HTC?

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...-of-new-phones/

"Apparently, HTC is having a little trouble keeping people with cameras out of its offices, as evidenced by this totally great spy shot of a what appears to be a bunch of (or two) new phones. We're familiar with quite of few of these devices, like the TyTn II, Touch Cruise, and Touch you see in the upper row, but things get a little stickier down below. Save for that P3470 that's second from left, we have no clue what those slick looking square numbers are."

I rather suspect all the three unknowns in the bottom row are the same device, but they sure look interesting. Engadget thinks they're T-Mobile's MDA Compact IV, but the jury's still out on that one - any chance we're seeing the HTC Dream?
