ASUS Galaxy 7 (P835) Gets an In-depth Look from Mobile Review

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 03:00 AM

http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/18/...ets-manhandled/

"Photos of the ASUS Galaxy 7 touchscreen phone have been popping up for months now, and due to a resemblance a certain Samsung device, it's been referred to more than once as an "Omnia-killer" (of course, we understand the urge, but we have to ask if it's even worth the effort). Now it looks like the folks over at Mobile Review have their hands on the thing, and they've been kind enough to share their thoughts. Right off the bat, they were disappointed to learn that plans for a 800 MHz processor had been scrapped in lieu of the far less exciting 528 MHz Qualcom MS7200A, but they then go on to give props to the phone's Glide interface (on par with TouchFlo3D, it seems) and its build quality...."

Mobile Review, a Russian mobile site, has done a great in-depth review of the Asus P835, or Galaxy 7. As usual, pricing and availability are unannounced, so if you just got some great Christmas cash, I don't know you'll want to keep holding on to it until the Galaxy arrives.

ADATA's Asus Eee Edition 16 GB SDHC Card

Posted by Chris Gohlke in "Digital Home Hardware & Accessories" @ 07:00 AM

In case you're new here, I love my Asus Eee PC. Of course, what would make it better? More memory of course! If you are not familiar with ADATA, you really should be. They may not be a recognizable name brand like Sandisk, but they produce memory cards that are an outstanding value for the consumer. Their 16 GB SDHC Eee branded card looks to be no exception. Asus P560 Coming Soon

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/...-many-acronyms/

"HSDPA, WiFi, 3.2 megapixel autofocus cam, Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR, GPS, microSDHC slot, 256MB of ROM, 128MB of RAM, and Microsoft's freshest build of Windows Mobile Professional -- 6.1, that is -- all have managed to find their way into the P560's unassuming shell. Not bad, though the €500 (about $772) price tag could scare a few folks away when it launches next month."

The first thing that struck me was - boy, is this thing loaded. The second thought that struck me was, pace EngadgetMobile that price is actually pretty reasonable. You'd only call it expensive if you're comparing against subsidised, SIM-locked phones - the P560 would actually come in quite a bit cheaper than the TyTN II (at least in my locale). It looks like Asus is following other manufacturers in overlaying the Today screen with their own UI, though if this a sample, it looks rather pedestrian. The hardware design doesn't stand out either, at least to me, yet the hardware specs scream premium device. Anybody else have thoughts on this?

MobileTechReview Reviews ASUS P527 with WM6

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/pho...s/ASUS-P527.htm

"The ASUS P527 Windows Mobile 6 Professional Pocket PC phone doesn’t have a slide-out keyboard, in fact it doesn’t have a QWERTY keyboard at all. Instead it has a number pad along with two columns of dedicated menu buttons....The ASUS P527 is a quad band GSM world phone with EDGE/GPRS for data. Sorry no 3G. It’s sold unlocked for use with any GSM carrier. The PDA phone is powered by a 200MHz TI OMAP processor, with 64MB of RAM and 128MB of flash ROM. The smartphone runs the Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating system and has integrated Bluetooth v2.0 +EDR and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g. The ASUS has an integrated 2-megapixel camera with auto-focus lens and the camera application uses the 2.6” LCD as its viewfinder. For road warriors, the P527 offers built-in GPS with the SiRF III chipset, navigation software and North America maps and POIs (on the $599 version). Additional features include a microSD card slot supporting SDHC, an FM radio and Business card reader."

If you've been wanting a Pocket PC Phone in the US that ISN'T designed by HTC, your choices have been very slim. Finally, ASUS officially enters the unlocked GSM phone market in North America with it's candy-bar style P527. While it lacks 3G, which could be a problem for AT&T users, it has other benefits, including SiRF III GPS, which doesn't require a monthly subscription like aGPS.
