Official Windows Mobile 7 Release Date (and demo?) at MWC in February?

Posted by Eriq Cook in "Windows Phone Events" @ 10:00 PM

http://www.digitimes.com/news/a20100122PD216.html

"Alongside the launch of Windows Mobile 6.6 at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2010, Microsoft is also expected to announce a date for the commercial availability of WM7, according to sources familiar with Microsoft's roadmap."

Finally, Microsoft will be announcing the official release date of Windows Mobile 7 at the MWC Conference in Barcelona (February 15th - 18th). Microsoft has been very quite regarding the timing of its Windows Mobile 7 release, but many sources including some manfacturers such as LG and HTC have already announced that we should start seeing WM7 devices between Q4 2010 and early 2011.

A lot can happen between now and Q4, but I have to believe that Microsoft will really try to push the appearance of WM7 devices this year as opposed to next. It's been long enough! From device manufacturer announcements to the recent rumours of WM7's features, I think 2010 will be the year that breathes new life back into the platform.

I hope that we not only get an official date announcement from Microsoft at MWC, but see a real working demo of Windows Mobile 7 in action. We'll have to wait about three more weeks to see...

Obsession Is WM7

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "HTC Windows Phones" @ 04:00 AM

http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...s-the-diamond3/

The Boy Genius Report has a piece on a new HTC device codenamed Obsession, that may just be the first native WM7 device to hit North America. The prospective specs matches or exceeds that of the HD2 (except for screen size), and the device is expected to be picked up by AT&T and T-Mobile as the successor to the Diamond 2. We've have no firm idea on the release date, but given how early this leak is and how close we are to MWC, there's a chance the Obsession//Diamond 3 will be announced at the same time as the expected official unveiling of WM7 this month.

Pinch Me - Microsoft To Issue Own-Brand Phones?

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/...-2010-with-two/

"Weekend gossip that has Microsoft and Sharp "unleashing" a pair of slider phones codenamed "Turtle" and "Pure" in January (likely at CES). JoFo thinks that it's possible that the rumored handsets could be announced in January, but any phone from Microsoft's Pink skunkworks project wouldn't launch until Windows Mobile 7 was ready, an OS not expected to ship on consumer devices until the end of 2010."

We have two reports from Engadget Mobile that Project Pink (here and here), which involves Microsoft's purchase of Danger (the makers of the Sidekick), is finally seeing some results. At this stage, virtually nothing is known about what specs or even which OS these devices will run, though I don't see Microsoft muddying their mobile strategy further by coming up with another ecosystem beyond Windows Mobile (or alternatively Zune). If WM7 is the target OS, that means these first two prototypes won't be on the market for another year, but given that these are relatively uncharted waters for Microsoft I'm not too surprised at the pace of development. I'm also thinking that with the ever tighter integration between software, hardware and services that the smartphone competitive space is moving towards, Microsoft is taking their time to get it right.

LG Monaco Sports WM7 And Pico Projector

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/...-qwerty-slider/

"This brassy little number is the LG "Monaco," which is apparently also known as the "Pico" to some folks; what it'll eventually be called at retail is anyone's guess, but the big news is the feature list: 3.6Mbps HSDPA, a 3.2-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel AF cam, microSD expansion, an add-on pico projector of some sort, and Windows Mobile 7."

Although destined for AT&T, you might have to wait a while for the Monaco to turn up - unless they slap WM6.5 on this. Engadget also mentions that the Monaco doesn't fulfill WM7 hardware criteria due to the slightly smaller screen, so I wonder if we really will see this running WM7. I admit to being a little unexcited by the known specs or the design, though I imagine both will be subject to change. If this had been released a year ago it might have been top dog, but now (sans projector) it looks strictly middle of the road.
