Windows Phone 7 Apps Cheaper than the Competition

Posted by Adan Galvan in "Windows Phone News" @ 07:00 AM

It is tough to argue that the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace doesn't still have a ways to go before it can be considered on par with the Android and iPhone equivalents. However, the growth of the marketplace is quickly providing users with a wealth of apps that seek to extend and improve on the feature set of the operating system. Furthermore, it seems that developers on average are pricing their apps at a discount to those on Android. According to analytics firm Distimo, Windows Phone 7 Marketplace apps sell for an average of just $1.95. In fact, that report shows that there are zero apps that sell for greater than 9.99. Marketplace Mayhem

"At this very moment, it is possible for any Joe Schmo to go over to Microsoft's server and download all of Windows Phone 7 XAP application packages without the need of a WP7 device or Zune Desktop software. This is possible because Zune software uses ATOM XML feed to grab application info, so it's just a matter of diving into the code to find the XAP package address and download it directly."

Yikes! This is probably the last thing Microsoft wants to see. The implication of this is that every app's source code is laid bare for anyone without any scruples. Developer support is one of the main foundations for WP7s success so let's hope this gets fixed soon.

Some Interesting Apps Are Starting To Appear In The Windows Phone 7 Marketplace

"While the ubiquitous "tip calculator" is there, the biggy appears to be a Google Voice app called 'GoVoice'. We're not sure if this a call-back method or one that auto-dials/logs in your Google account, but either way it's a good sign some of us will be able to continue using our Google Voice number when we get our new phone."

If you are currently a smartphone owner, or planning to become one, you will, well, spend a lot of time looking for and trying out apps. The image above illustrates the Marketplace hub on Windows Phone 7. Now, while the apps in this hub image are not too exciting, WMExperts has a very interesting screen shot of a portion of the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace where future owners will be able to download their apps. Tucked in the screen shot is an icon for a Google Voice app called "GoVoice". I wonder what that might do? How much functionality will that app have? This could be one of the first apps you want to download and try out. Hit the Read link to head on over to WMExperts and see the screen shot first hand.

Windows Phone 7 Marketplace: Will We Find Some Surprises At Launch?

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 06:00 PM

"Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 was missing a critical feature -- web video -- when we previewed it late last month, but it appears the platform may have at least a YouTube solution before all is said and done. A former Microsoft program manager with access to the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace tweeted the above picture earlier this week, which shows that there are at least placeholders for a variety of games and productivity tools as well as Yelp and YouTube -- the latter of which is listed as a "Music Hub Add-On.""

Sean Hollister over at Engadget posted the above image, which was tweeted from a former Microsoft Program Manager, which hints at some of what we might expect to find in the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace. There has been a lot of speculation on the topic of apps for Windows Phone 7. There is just so much we don't know yet. How many apps will we find on day 1? Will there be apps with unique functionality for the new platform, or mostly duplicates from other platforms? How will developers exploit the hub capability? What will the Marketplace experience be like?

Taking a step back, what are your favorite 2-3 smartphone apps that you would love to see (or can't live without) on the Windows Phone 7 platform?
