Touch Pro 2: Time To Reminisce?

Posted by Brad Wasson in "HTC Windows Phones" @ 09:00 PM

"While we don't have official word from Verizon, it appears that the Touch Pro 2's run has unexpectedly come to halt, at least for online sales."

WMExperts has discovered that the HTC Touch Pro 2 is no longer available for order from Verizon (at least online). Is this the mark of the end of the line for this popular phone? I for one remember when I actually got to try this phone for the first time. I was very impressed with the form factor, particularly the screen size and the keyboard. I nearly bought one, but decided to hold out for the potential of buying the HD2. That never happened either, as that phone has never officially been released in Canada where I reside. Nevertheless, I did follow reviews of the Touch Pro 2, many of which were particularly positive. It's quite interesting to read the comments posted on this WMExperts article. I've no doubt that the Touch Pro 2 turned many people into smartphone enthusiasts. I like HTC products and am anxiously waiting to see what Windows Phone 7 goodies they have in mind for us. Are you a Touch Pro 2 owner? If so, let us know in the comments what you think of it.

Sprint Says Touch Pro 2 6.5 Update By End of Q1

Posted by Jon Westfall in "HTC Windows Phones" @ 09:00 AM

"Windows Mobile 6.5 fever: catch it! AT&T had the good fortune of releasing the Tilt2 late enough to get 6.5 out of the gate, but the other guys have been falling in line ever since: first Verizon, then T-Mobile, and now Sprint's getting in on the action. The bad news is that they're only committing to a vague "by the end of first quarter, 2010" window at this point"

Ah the dysfunctional Windows Mobile update model. Microsoft releases the update, and providers screw around with it for months first deciding if they should release it (or hold back hoping people will buy newer models), then tote the official party line of "we must make sure it works well on our network" (Hint: It always does, this just gives them a stall line for another 4-6 months). Then they must decide what sort of crap to put in the ROM that you'll never actually use (That takes 1-2 more months I'm guessing). Finally they have the update ready, but usually decide to hold off another 1-2 months just for fun (Looking squarely at you T-mobile...). Finally around 10 months after Microsoft releases the version, it may show up on some handsets owned by the devoted masses, but most likely won't as they've already moved on. Seriously guys - this is messed up!

Verizon Ozone and Touch Pro 2 Get 6.5 Love!

Posted by Pete Paxton in "Windows Phone News" @ 06:00 AM

"Sure we told you about the official build of for the Windows Mobile 6.5 upgrade for the venerable HTC Ozone on Verizon (see review) leaked a few days ago, but what about an official release? Looks like Big-V pulled the trigger and you can now get the upgrade directly from PCD, their 3rd party support channel thing-a-majig. And yes, it's the exact same build number as the leaked, so if you did flash with the earlier version, no need to re-do it. And wow, look at that, not only did the Ozone get its official update, but so did the Verizon Touch Pro 2."

So if you're the proud owner of either of these two devices, you can now have the latest Microsoft has to offer. It's always a good thing when companies keeps up with updates. Good job Verizon for making sure customers can keep their current devices up to date. If there's something particular that makes the upgrade for either the Ozone or the Touch Pro 2 great for you, let us know. Happy upgrading.

Easily Free Your SIM From a T-Mobile Touch Pro 2

Posted by Jon Westfall in "HTC Windows Phones" @ 12:30 PM

I really like a lot of things about my T-Mobile Touch Pro 2. However one thing I detest is the SIM card slot. The provided method you are asked to use (pressing down on a small silver latch and then sliding the card out) simply doesn't work. I've tried jamming the stylus under it, on it, around it, and that isn't the best solution either. Finally this morning I found a method that works very well, is easy to do, requires very little outside funding, and is safe: A Paperclip! Bent up paperclip to be precise, with a small loop that can lift the SIM card up just enough to slide it out. Check out the video below for my simple fix, and be free to swap SIMs like a maniac (a.k.a. like me).

T-Mobile Windows Mobile 6.5 Upgrades In Early January?

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Windows Phone News" @ 07:30 AM

"The good news is that this isn't the 400th article this month talking about a potential Sprint/T-Mobile merger. The better news is that this rumor has a stronger chance of coming true than a Sprint/T-Mobile merger. One of my trusty ninjas hit me up tonight with information claiming that a Windows Mobile 6.5 update will see the light of day for the TouchPro2 and Dash 3G beginning January 6th, 2010"

It's a rumor reported by TMoNews, to be sure, however hopefully it's somewhat accurate. I mean when else will T-Mo finally get around to popping out the 6.5 updates for these two phones anyway? (Actually, if past track record is any indication, January 6th 2011 is probably just as likely). Hopefully though within a month us loyal T-mo users will have an official 6.5 upgrade - you know, the OS that was released on October 6 -- for those devices released in early and mid summer!

AT&T Announces Pure and Tilt 2!

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 03:30 PM

"AT&T* and HTC Corporation, a global designer of mobile phones, today announced the upcoming availability of the HTC TiltTM 2 and the HTC PURETM with Windows® Mobile 6.5. The HTC PURE delivers a touch screen experience in an alluring, compact form factor, and the HTC Tilt 2 features the convenience of a tilting touch screen combined with the practicality of a slide out full QWERTY keyboard."

Ah, AT&T is announcing two great Windows Phone offerings, the Pure (The HTC Touch Diamond 2) and the Tilt 2 (The HTC Touch Pro 2). Who knows what's pure about a Touch Diamond, or why we didn't see a crazy new name similar to "Fuze" (Perhaps the "Cerket Braker" or "Swich"), and I'm sure these two new offerings won't help AT&T's abysmal coverage issues (Hey, you'll love the 70% of calls you don't drop in NYC, right?)!

Clinton Fitch Reviews HTC Touch Pro 2 & TouchFLO3D

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 10:00 AM

"For this review I had the HTC Touch Pro 2 for about 3 weeks thanks to HTC and I found it quite hard to let it go. It performed flawlessly during my testing and the new TouchFLO3D made using it virtually stylus-free. It is simply stunning both in performance and in functionality."

Clinton Fitch seems to have been a big fan of the Touch Pro 2, a device sitting on my own desk right now (It's the TP2's turn in the rotation between a Dash 3G and a MyTouch 3G). I must admit, it is one of the most stylish and polished devices I've used in quite awhile. Kudos HTC!

Touch Pro 2 Reviewed by Engadget

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 01:30 PM

"That's why droves of subscribers on virtually every carrier are on the edge of their seats awaiting the Touch Pro2's release. Whether you love, hate, or feel nothing but pure, unadulterated ambivalence toward Windows Mobile, it's hard to argue that the Pro2 isn't a gorgeous smartphone at a distance, and T-Mobile USA's gently-tweaked version is no exception."

Engadget has a nice write-up on the Touch Pro 2, including more pictures like the one above. Overall it isn't a bad looking device, and it's taking a lot of control for me not to buy one. However with 2 phones already purchased this summer, I think I should hold off for awhile!

Sprint's Touch Pro 2 to have 3.5mm Jack

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 08:30 AM

"We already knew the CDMA HTC Touch Pro2 headed to Telus and Verizon had been upgraded with a 3.5mm headphone jack, so it's not a huge surprise that the Sprint version has one too"

I haven't used a 3.5mm jack in years, and so I haven't missed one for the last 3 years that HTC has shunned them. However here is more proof that they are on their way back. Now if we can just keep everything constant for 10 years - Mini-usb, 3.5mm jack, and microSD card, I'd be happy.

T-Mo Wants How Much For a Touch Pro 2?

Posted by Jon Westfall in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 09:30 AM

"And then, there's this. T-Mobile USA has somehow found it within its heart to charge a near-astronomical $349.99 (on a two-year agreement, no less) for HTC's latest WinMo-packin' powerhouse, the Touch Pro2. Look, we aren't saying the phone isn't worth its weight in gold, but a quick look around the marketplace shows just how out of place this obscenely large asking price really is"

Engadget got it right with their hand signals on the above image. Of course price rumors have been going around like mad on this device, and who knows - perhaps even T-Mobile has gotten in the game and the above is just a big joke. Probably not, but we can dream.

T-Mobile Roadmap Leaked

Posted by Ed Hansberry in "Pocket PC News" @ 05:00 AM

TmoNews has uncovered some release dates for a number of Windows Mobile phones on the US T-Mobile network. It looks like the HTC Snap will be available around July 1 and the Wing II, better known as the HTC Touch Pro 2, will be available around July 22. HTC has said that the Touch Pro 2 will have an upgrade made available to WinMo 6.5 later this year. I hope T-Mobile passes that upgrade along.

HTC Touch Pro 2 Gallery

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 05:00 AM Pro 2&imgnum=52&handyUID=1621 have a great gallery of the new Touch Pro 2, with comparison shots against the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1. The Touch Pro 2 is a little larger because of the bigger screen, but I like the rounded edges and overall shape - it looks like something comfortable to hold, size notwithstanding. Check out the rest of the gallery for more!
