SanDisk Can't Keep a Secret: Microsoft "Pink" Phones Being Announced on Monday

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 03:58 PM

http://www.phonescoop.com/news/item.php?n=5797

"Today SanDisk confirmed that the 'Project Pink' device(s) to be announced on Monday by Microsoft will have memory card slots and will be compatible with SanDisk's microSD cards."

And just like that, SanDisk's over-eager PR people have blown Microsoft's launch announcement. And for what? No one cares if a phone has a microSD card slot SanDisk - they'd only care if it didn't have one. This is PR at its worst - bumbling, useless efforts that only serve to embarrass the company doing it. Somebody needs to go back to PR school and get taught the basics again: you don't screw up your partner's launch.

UPDATE: SanDisk contacted me with a statement. "The SanDisk PR team sent a handful of reporters some information about our microSD cards today referencing a widely anticipated Microsoft announcement on Monday. While we reiterated a launch date that has been widely reported this week, it was not our place to do so. However, to be clear, SanDisk has no specific information on Microsoft's plans and we did not confirm any details, card slot or otherwise, about a potential Microsoft product in the pitch we shared. SanDisk is very excited about the opportunities in the mobile category and consumer's growing demand for increasing amounts of flash storage memory on their devices. Our pitch was designed to demonstrate that enthusiasm and nothing more." - SanDisk PR Team

More Background on Microsoft's Problems With Pink

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Pocket PC Talk" @ 08:38 AM

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...dows_phone.html

"Earlier this week, an anonymous tipster leaked the news that Microsoft's top secret Pink project, aimed to take on the iPhone just as the Zune targeted the iPod, was "near death and probably will be canceled." Another source has now spilled even more details about the internal crisis brewing within the company and how the failure of Pink relates to iPhone, Google's Android, and Windows Mobile."

Normally you wouldn't see me linking to something at AppleInsider, let alone something by Apple ultra-fanboy Daniel Eran Dilger, but this article has the ring of truth to it - at least, insofar as anything about Microsoft can be reported truthfully at an Apple blog. I know a couple of people on the Premium Mobile Experiences team, and they've remained tight-lipped about what they've been working on - but it seems clear now they've been working on Pink given some clues that are now obvious in hindsight.

If the article is accurate about all the trouble that Pink is now in as a product (or platform), it would certainly explained the fragmented and dazed strategies from the Windows Mobile team - if a company can't come together with a cohesive plan for mobility, they're not going to come up with what they need to compete with the likes of Apple, Google, RIM, and Nokia. Was Pink merely a ploy to motivate the Windows Mobile team into kicking it into high gear? No, I don't think so - the people I know on the Premium Mobile Experiences are smart and talented, and wouldn't waste their efforts on something unless they felt it would have an impact on that market. So what exactly is the future of Pink? Time will tell...

Microsoft Branded WM Phone?

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Talk" @ 01:00 AM

http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/...rosoft-branded/

"ZDNet's Mary Jo Foley says her best understanding of "Pink" is now that it's a Microsoft-branded phone running a custom UI on top of Windows Mobile 7, developed by what's left of the Danger team and targeted at the Sidekick market. Yep, Microsoft-branded -- as in, the exact thing Microsoft has been denying for ages now."

The current Windows Mobile ecosystem is similar to the way Microsoft has treated the PC world - an MS based operating system riding on hardware made by others. First Xbox, then Zune, demonstrated Microsoft's willingness to break away from that hugely successful paradigm, because it didn't translate well to other markets. Are we going to see the same thing in the Windows Mobile world? Apple showed one way to build a market based on a closed eco-system - but then Microsoft didn't exactly have a blazing success emulating this model with the Zune. Windows Mobile has in its own understated way been a success because it met the needs of the enterprise market. Now that smartphones for consumers are all the rage, this (along with WM7) looks like the MS response. Good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts wanted!

Microsoft, Verizon, and "Pink" Being Delayed?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Pocket PC Talk" @ 04:21 PM

"In-house development delays are putting a stealth Microsoft-Verizon smartphone project in danger of collapse, Channelweb.com has learned. Microsoft and Verizon Wireless have reportedly been working on a Microsoft-branded touch-screen smartphone that Verizon could launch on its network as early as next year. The smartphone, code-named Pink, would consist of Microsoft software running on a third-party device, according to sources familiar with the project. However, Microsoft has encountered major setbacks that have affected its schedule for bringing Pink to market, sources said."

I lost count of the number of rumours and points of speculation in this article, but it would seem there's something to this given the sheer number of rumours strung together. The question is, though, is whether this is a Windows Mobile device. What if it's a Danger Sidekick running a bunch of Windows Live software? It's hard to say given how much rampant speculation there is in this article. What's not speculation though is that Windows Mobile 6.5 devices are still not here yet, and Windows Mobile 7 is even further out. Has anyone else noticed that Windows Mobile isn't even mentioned in many of the articles talking about the major players in the mobile space? Microsoft sold north of 15 million licenses world-wide last year, yet somehow they're not considered a serious player in the market.
