Import Your Outlook Contacts To Your Windows Phone

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 02:30 PM

http://www.wpcentral.com/import-con...rts+(wpcentral)

"Should you be looking to purchase a Windows Phone 7 handset, or have just recently made the switch, you may be wandering if you can import your contacts from Outlook if you don't have an Exchange email account or have your contacts stored remotely elsewhere. Well, you can and it's fairly straight forward too."

You know the feeling. You get a new phone and you wonder how you're going to get all your contacts off your old phone onto the new one. If you are a Microsoft Exchange user then you might have a smug look on your face as it is, well, pretty straight forward. That said, if you aren't an Exchange user then wpcentral's explanation of how to do it is very useful to have access to.

APPA Mundi Tasks for Windows Phone 7

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Software" @ 02:00 PM

http://appamundi.com/products/tasks/

"APPA Mundi Tasks is an advanced Task manager application which synchronizes with your Exchange Server mailbox to make your task list available on the move."

As the poll I published earlier this week shows, there's a large majority of users who need Tasks support on Windows Phone 7 - it just so happens that the developer of APPA Mundi Tasks posted in that thread letting us know about his product, so here I am sharing it with all of you. It even syncs with Exchange! If you've been looking for a Tasks solution, try this out and let me know how it works.

How Important is Tasks Support in Windows Phone 7?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 10:00 AM

The issue of Tasks is a funny one: people tend to either use them heavily, wish they were disciplined enough to use them heavily, or not care at all about them. The complete lack of Tasks support in Windows Phone 7 causes some people immense frustration, while others could care less. I'm trying to get a handle on how damaging the lack of Tasks support is to the Windows Phone 7 platform, so do me a favour and vote in this survey.

Windows Phone 7 and Outlook Sync: The Forgotten Scenario?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 03:01 PM

http://social.answers.microsoft.com.../?prof=required

Over at the Microsoft Answers forum, there's a very long thread where many users are chiming in on the same subject: the lack of desktop Outlook sync with Windows Phone 7 is a big problem for them. Microsoft forum software is pretty bizarre, so I can't tell how many posts there are in this thread, but I'd guess it's at least 100+. When any discussion thread reaches 100 posts, you know it's a serious issue.

I remember when I first heard about this decision; it was at the Mobius 2009 event. You could hear a pin drop when Aaron Woodman announced that Windows Phone 7 would be completely cloud-centric: there would be no way to get email, calendar, contacts, or even files via the desktop...it would only come via the cloud. The repercussions of this decision were huge, and long-time Windows Mobile users were shocked when the product shipped without the ability to do any sort of local sync. Is it a problem for you? Vote in the poll, but keep reading...

Xobni Public Beta Now Available, New York Times Coverage of Company

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Pocket PC Software" @ 11:30 AM

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/05/05/t...r=1&oref=slogin

"Adam Smith was 12 when Microsoft introduced its desktop e-mail program, Outlook. Outlook is now the most popular e-mail tool in the world, used by hundreds of millions of people. And Mr. Smith, now 23, thinks that the program is so poorly suited for most people’s intensive e-mail habits that he has co-founded a company, Xobni, intended to fix it. “Using Outlook today is like taking a Volkswagen Beetle into space,” Mr. Smith said. “People are kind of exerting all these stresses upon it that it wasn’t originally designed to withstand.” Xobni, based in San Francisco, is introducing a new tool on Monday that plugs into Outlook. Mr. Smith’s general complaint — one that is shared by many users of Outlook — is that the more the program is used, the slower it gets and the harder it is to search for e-mail addresses and phone numbers."

I posted about Xobni a while ago, and it seems that they're finally ready for a wide-spread public beta because I received notification today that their software was ready for downloading. This New York Times article has details about the company, and how they were almost purchased by Microsoft, and if you're looking to download the beta, you can do so here. I'm going to install it in a few minutes - let me know what you think of it if you install it.

Google Calendar Sync Updated

Posted by Tim Williamson in "Digital Home Software" @ 03:00 PM

http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/...nc-updated.html

"Thanks for all the feedback you have sent us about Google Calendar Sync. We're rolling out an update that should make it a lot more useful. Previously, your Google Calendar email address needed to be the organizer or an attendee of your Microsoft Outlook events for the Outlook events to sync to your Google Calendar. Now, when you choose to do a 2-way sync or a 1-way sync from Outlook calendar to Google Calendar, all of your Outlook events will be synced to your Google Calendar. If you haven't been auto-updated to Google Calendar Sync 0.9.3.2 and you don't want to wait for the update, you can download it here."

Google is pushing out an update to correct some bugs in their Calendar Sync. I've been too chicken to try it out yet, I'll let the suckers...err...early adopters iron out any bugs first (hehe!). My main concern is how well recurring appointments sync up between Outlook and Google Calendar. For those of you who've used Calendar Sync, do you have any good or bad feedback to share? Has anyone had their calendar wiped out or other horror stories? Or has it been smooth sailing?
