Asus, Dell, HTC, LG, Samsung All Working on Windows Phone 7

"While there's still shockingly few details about the launch of the Windows Phone 7 platform, Microsoft has now at least revealed a list of manufacturers that will be producing the first set of Phone 7 handsets. The Inquirer reports that Asustek, Dell, HTC, LG, and Samsung are all working on Windows Phone 7 devices, although you won't be able to find names, technical specs, or pictures for any of these devices just yet."

There's not much that's new here, other than a confirmation that those OEMs are still on board - perhaps a verification that they haven't given up on Windows Phones like HP has. Looking at the above image though, which comes from a February 15th Engadget story, one has to ask what happened to Sony Ericsson? I've sent inquiries to both Microsoft PR and Sony Ericsson PR and will post their responses when I get them.

Microsoft Looking to Help Windows Phone 7 OEMs Develop Unique Applications

"Here's the simple truth about touchscreen smartphones: it's the software, dummy. Just look around at all the flagship handsets... other than a choice of with or without a QWERTY, today's handsets all look pretty much the same and are built using the same off-the-shelf components with very few exceptions."

One of the side effects of the Windows Phone 7 UI interface being immovable from an OEM perspective is that there's very real possibility that many of these devices will feel the same from a software perspective. That's the catch-22 you get when you enforce a UI - but I still believe it's the right thing for Microsoft to do. They are, however, going to be helping their OEM partners to add some "secret sauce" to the overall user interface. Hopefully, to good effect!
