MobileTechReview Examines the Palm Treo Pro

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 04:00 PM

http://www.mobiletechreview.com/pho...lm-Treo-Pro.htm

"When we reviewed the Palm Treo 750 more than 1.5 years ago, it was a good phone with great ergonomics and Palm's usability touches that lacked competitive features like WiFi and a GPS. 1.5 years is a very long time in terms of consumer electronics and cell phones, and now we finally have a Windows Mobile Treo with all the trimmings, but minus the original Treo's wonderful palm-friendly (no pun intended) design, great keyboard and software tweaks. Funny how we can't have it both ways. That's not to say that the HTC-built Palm Treo Pro is a bad product by any means, but for those of you who are in love with Palm's special sauce-- it ain't here. There's no VCR-like screen controls for voicemail, no photo speed dial on the home screen and the custom applications like Comm Manager and the streaming media player are HTC's, not Palm's."

Once again, MobileTechReview offers an indepth look at a mobile device. This time, the Palm Treo Pro is examined, especially in the light of previous Palm devices they've reviewed. Since the new hardware bears a close resemblance to the design of the bargain Centro, the MTR take on ergonomics is especially interesting to those who anticipate using the keyboard heavily.

Tracy and Matt's Blog Unboxes the Palm Treo Pro

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC Articles" @ 10:00 AM

"A few weeks ago we attended the Palm Treo Pro launch even in London and since then I've been trying to get my hands on a review unit. Finally managed to get my hands on one last Friday and have spent the last few days 'playing' with it. So far I'm quite happy with the Treo Pro, battery life seems really good and I quite like the fixed QWERTY keyboard rather than a slider. The OS is quite fast thanks to the 400MHz CPU and 128MB RAM."

Matt offers a small writeup of the device and then an unboxing video for a closer look at the Palm Treo's hardware and of course, what's in the box. Initially, the WM 6.1 GSM phone seems to be available in the US for an unlocked price of $550. One interesting note that Matt points out is the screen size, 320 x 320, which could cause problems with some software. Look for a fuller review later on. Anyone interested in snapping up the Treo Pro? I've seen some commentators call it "underwhelming" and wonder what our community likes or doesn't about the new Palm.

Verizon Slides Show Samsung i770, Palm 800W, and Network Updates

Posted by Paul Martin in "Pocket PC News" @ 04:00 PM

"Sandwiched between a pair of overdue TPS reports in our desk's inbox this morning was this little gem, a glossy Verizon presentation filled with magical, exotic wonders hailing from a place and time not too far from our own. For starters, we're guessing that the giant "ID NOT FINAL" label here means that the Samsung i770 won't look quite like this nightmarish blue slab of death by the time it's released, but even if it does, we're happy to report that it'll still be sporting the GSM radio for global service we've been hearing about all along."

Engadget Mobile managed to get ahold of a Verizon slide presentation which reveals some promising device plans including the Samsung i770, the rumored worldband version of the i760, and will sport both EvDO and GSM when it's released this fall. The slides also show the XV6800 should have received a WM6.1 update in May and the i760 should have it's 6.1 upgrade released this month. Other goodies include a WiFi-enabled Palm 800W also planned for 3rd Quarter this year, system updates, and even specifics on coverage expansion. Check out the full gallery of slides here.
