Verizon Clearing The Deck

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Windows Phone News" @ 01:00 PM

Every Windows Mobile device that Verizon is currently offering, including the HTC Touch Pro 2 and the Samsung Omnia 2, will be off the shelf by the first quarter of next year according to a leaked end-of-life document. You can take this one of two ways - either Verizon is completely fed up with Microsoft after the Kin debacle, or they're placing a big bet on Windows Phone 7. I wouldn't lay odds either way. Hit the link for the details.

The Official Phone of the 2010 Winter Olympics? The Samsung OMNIA II

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Pocket PC News" @ 05:00 PM

"Bell and Samsung today announced the exclusive availability of the Samsung OMNIA II touchscreen smartphone - the Official Mobile Device of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games - to operate on Bell Mobility's all-new HSPA network in November. The Samsung OMNIA II will be the perfect device for accessing Bell Mobility's upcoming offering of exclusive 2010 Winter Games mobile content. Clients can also personalize their Samsung OMNIA II with an included Samsung Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games decal."

The most interesting part of this news isn't that the Samsung OMNIA II has been made the official phone of the 2010 Winter Olympics - it's that Bell, one of Canada's two CDMA carriers, is launching their HSPA network this month. Telus, the other CDMA carrier, is going to be doing the same - and both are doing so as a step toward an LTE-based 4G network.

Samsung's TouchWiz 2.0 UI supposedly does a good job in hiding the standard Windows Mobile interface. Want to know how good a job? ai.rs blog has the goods with a gallery of screenshots.

New Omnia From Samsung?

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Pocket PC Hardware" @ 11:00 AM

"Phone Area also says this handset has also appeared with the Cubic37 codename. Pair that with the cube button at the bottom of the phone, and it's getting pretty likely that it could sport Samsung's rumored 3D cube UI...Obviously this isn't something we'd see here with only the 2100MHz 3G band. But it's defintely something we'll an eye out for more on it in the future."

Ever since Samsung confirmed that the Omnia brand will be exclusively Windows Mobile, we've been waiting for another handset that could match what's been offered in the Symbian-based i8910. While this model won't sport HDMI out (that we know of), the rest of the specs are great: 3.7" capacitive AMOLED screen, Quadband GSM, GPS, and 8.1MP AF camera - at least as far as we know. Details are still sketchy and probably subject to change (the processor doesn't appear to support the camera resolution), so here's hoping for more than single band 3G support.
