Reminder: Revised AT&T Data Plans Takes Effect On Sunday

Posted by Richard Chao in "Windows Phone News" @ 09:30 PM

http://www.anandtech.com/show/5443/...tphones-tablets

"Beginning this Sunday, January 22, AT&T will begin offering new data plans to its US smartphone and tablet customers, its first change to the plans since June 2010."

If you are constantly finding yourself using just a tick over your data plan allowances and thereby incurring overages, AT&T's new data plans may be for you. Smartphone plans are now available in either 300MB ($20), 3GB ($30) and 5GB ($50). Subscribers of the 5GB plan will get tethering tossed in for free. Tablet plans have also been revised to 3GB ($30) and 5GB ($50). The low end 250MB tablet plan for $14.99 is the only plan that remains unchanged.

Of course if you are happy with your current plan, you may elect to stay with it but new subscribers will have to choose from one of the new plans.

Survey Says Teens Still "Generation Text Message"

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 02:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/05/...lmost-all-send/

"...only 23 percent of American teenagers with cellphones use social networks with their phones, while 72 percent of all teens use text messaging. You might argue that Kin seeks to flip that balance, but Pew found that 63 percent of teens with cell phones don't have data plans and the vast majority of teen cellphone plans are part of a larger family plan..."

As if the devastating pricing on the Kin phone plans aren't enough to suck it into oblivion, this survey about teen phone usage makes that product a hard sell; texting is still what teens do most, though I think that if Kin phone plans were priced with some degree of intelligence, they'd be in a prime position to snag the teens "graduating" from text messaging to using more rich messaging options. The real killer is always price in scenarios like this where mom and dad are probably paying for the plans.

AT&T Considering Data Plan Surcharge for Heavy Users?

Posted by Reid Kistler in "Windows Phone Articles & Resources" @ 06:00 PM

http://www.pcworld.com/article/1840...users_more.html

"AT&T is moving even closer to charging special usage fees to heavy data users, including those with iPhones and other smartphones. Ralph de la Vega, CEO of AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, today came the closest he has so far in warning about some kind of use-based pricing."

The idea of charging for, and/or placing a cap on, "excessive" data usage, always raises a firestorm of protest. Matt Hamblen, of Computerworld, managed to post a straight news story about comments made on this subject, among others, by Ralph de la Vega of AT&T. Having originally come to the "WWW" in the days of CompuServe and Prodigy, where we almost literally paid by the minute, the concept of tiered pricing does not seem out of bounds.

And if, indeed, "3% of smartphone users... are responsible for 40% of total data usage," and wireless bandwidth is truly limited, does AT&T have a point? Is there any method by which they could make data limits or pricing surcharges acceptable? Or, to play devil's advocate, might AT&T - or any carrier, for that matter - actually be better off if they simply dropped the highest data users?
