Fix For Lumia 900 On The Way

Posted by Nurhisham Hussein in "Nokia Windows Phones" @ 11:00 PM

http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/news...data-glitch.ars

"Some Nokia Lumia 900 customers have been experiencing a loss of data connectivity-both LTE and 3G-on their new handsets. Nokia has identified the problem and devised a software fix, which will be rolled out on or around April 16th. Customers not wanting to wait can have their phones swapped for updated versions in AT&T stores. The company will also give any AT&T customer buying a Lumia between now and April 21 a $100 credit on their next bill."

At the price AT&T are retailing the Lumia for (with contract), that $100 credit means you're effectively getting the Lumia for free. If you aren't afraid of hooking up with AT&T, that's a pretty good deal for what looks like one of the better Windows Phone 7 devices out there. And kudos to Nokia for the fast turnaround.

Yahoo Fires Back: Windows Phone 7 Data Bug is From "Non-Standard IMAP Implementation"

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone News" @ 02:09 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/02/...r-windows-phon/

Courtesy of Engadget, here's Yahoo's statement on the subject:

"Yahoo! Mail is widely available on tens of millions of mobile phones, including those running on Apple iOS, Android, Nokia Symbian, and RIM. The issue on the Windows Phones is specific to how Microsoft chose to implement IMAP for Yahoo! Mail and does not impact Yahoo! Mail on these other mobile devices. Yahoo! has offered to provide Microsoft a near-term solution for the implementation they chose, and is encouraging Microsoft to change to a standard way of integrating with Yahoo! Mail, which would result in a permanent fix."

Microsoft has a long history of not taking POP/IMAP seriously, so I'm inclined to believe Yahoo in this instance. Microsoft has always been fixated on great Exchange support, to a fault, so this IMAP issue with Yahoo doesn't surprise me at all. Prior to Windows Phone 7, IMAP performance was horrific - my iPod Touch could poll my personal email, download messages, and be done before my HTC HD2 was done the initial check for new messages. Windows Phone 7 seems to be quite a bit better in that regard - checking IMAP email is quite quick - but it wouldn't surprise me that Microsoft perhaps took some liberties with how their implementation of IMAP works.

Did any Windows Phone Thoughts readers get hit by this bug? What did it do to your data consumption?

WP7 Data Bug Finally Identified?

Posted by Brad Wasson in "Windows Phone Talk" @ 04:30 PM

http://windowsphonesecrets.com/2011...e-data-hog-bug/

"We have determined that a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones is configured in a manner that potentially cause larger than expected data downloads. We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents."

A pesky bug that reportedly uploads upwards of 50MB of data to unsuspecting Windows Phone 7 users may finally have been unearthed. It is believed that a third-party solution is at least partly to blame. Microsoft is working together with the solution provider on a fix. Readers: have any of you experienced this issue?
