Activesync And WMDC FAQ

"With ActiveSync 3.x and 4.x and Windows Mobile Device Center (WMDC) you need to create a partnership between your Windows Mobile device and your PC in order to sync. The partnership contains the information about what information you are synchronizing between your device and your PC. This FAQ covers important information about these partnerships."

Chris De Herrera of PocketPCFAQ.com has just posted a FAQ on Activesync and WMDC that gives the basics of what you need to know. If you're not familiar with either, the FAQ provides a useful primer. Chris is mistaken about one thing though - it is possible to delete partnerships on WM2003 and WM3003SE devices without resorting to a hard reset. Details after the break.

While you can't directly manage partnership settings and info in WM2003 directly, they are accessible through the registry. The settings location is HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\, and actual partnership details are at HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\, either in P1 or P2 depending on how many partnerships you have. All you have to do to delete a partnership is clear the entries for "PName" and "PId" in P1 or P2, and soft reset. That's a far easier procedure than doing a hard reset and having to rebuild your device.
