Stars Vongo Service: Legal Movie Downloads for Mobiles & More

For quite a while now, we've been expecting someone to roll out a legal movie download service that goes beyond a couple of TV series episodes and short clips, and also goes beyond the PC so you can watch the content on the go . . . . It looks like Starz has seen the signs too, as they're rolling out a new video on demand service that seems to target the portable market. . . .For a low, low US$9.99 a month, you have unlimited viewing rights, although some movies require an additional $3.99 pay-per-view fee. On initial inspection, we estimate that roughly 20 percent of the catalog is pay-per-view, but it does not appear to be the case that all of the "hit movies" are pay-per-view"[/i]

Jason mentioned Vongo in his recent post about CES 2006. Arstechnica have a few more details about the service, including the fact that each downloaded file will only work for as long as the Starz license for it is valid, i.e. you are not buying videos, but renting them instead. A subscription works on up to three machines. Microsoft have big plans for Vongo (think of Windows mobile, Xbox 360, Windows Media centres etc.), so watch this space.....
