SyChip Announces a Dual-Mode Wi-Fi/VoIP Module

"SyChip today released its new VWLAN7100 offering, which the company said combines Wi-Fi support and Voice over IP technology in one module. The company is selling the chip to phone and personal digital assistant manufacturers. The company's product highlights the growing trend in the wireless industry toward dual-mode devices, those that combine wide area and local area wireless networks. Although several handset makers including Nokia Corp., Siemens AG and other have already released such dual-mode devices, the gadgets are mainly designed for data crunching rather than voice calls."

Half of you probably use a SyChip-based product without even knowing, so I can imagine there being the same old widespread adoption of this dual-mode 802.11g/VoIP module once it is integrated into PDAs and add-on cards. The VWLAN7100 will give users the freedom to roam between cellular networks and VoIP networks trouble-free, and supposedly in the most cost-effective fashion. A step towards convergence? It's certainly a good start.
