RioScan, known for its barcode scanning products, recently announced an addition to their product suite: ScanSeek CE. The Pocket PC application allows "users to create custom mobile data collection applications with their Pocket PC by using existing databases."

It seems as if the middleware market just woke up from its 18 months sleep. Back then everone wanted to be The Middleware Guy, but apart from companies such as Odyssey Software, Synchrologic and Extended Systems, very few really made it. I welcome new options and competition, but keep looking for: solid references, fair licensing rules, and product plans related to .NET Compact Framework and XML Web Services.

More from the press release: "How it Works: ScanSeek CE allows a user to download an existing ODBC database to a handheld device. Once the database is downloaded, the user can add, edit, and/or delete information using the scanning function, drop-down list function, as well as the keystroke function of the handheld device. The user can then upload the information back to the PC using one-touch syncing to update the database. ScanSeek CE offers one-touch data synchronization, wizard-based configuration, indexed searching on a handheld device, along with support for a wide variety of databases through ODBC including Microsoft(R) Access, Microsoft Excel(R), and SQL Server."
