Microsoft has had a couple of critical "missing pieces" in regards to mobile solutions system architecture. These pieces are now are being found and fixed one by one! The three most apparant ones have been:

• Microsoft Exchange synchronization
• Component Remoting
• Application Distribution

Microsoft Mobile Information Server has been out a while and delivers on the first missing piece - Microsoft Exchange synchronization.

With its .NET Compact Framework and inherent support for Web Services, Microsoft addresses the secong missing piece - Component Remoting

It seems as if Application Distribution has been the hardest to fix. Meanwhile, Extended Systems has ruled and made itself a market of distribution of mobile applications, all its own. But now, Microsoft starts outlining its strategy even in this area. It seems, not surprisingly, that they will rely on the Systems Management Server team to deliver application distribution not only to PCs but also to Pocket PCs.
